Took a beautiful five mile hike here, all of it easy peasy, just rolling hills and lovely landscapes. You can cut off into wider and wider circles through the preserve, which tailors your experience as far as how much time you have or how far you feel comfortable walking. Very relaxing stroll.
Multiple trails ranging from 1 - 10 miles. Easy terrain, well-marked, nice views.
Well maintained, safe, well marked trails, great views, helpful staff. A gem.
Great place for a quiet hike. Takes a little bit to get there, but once on the blue trail (10 mile) it's really nice and quiet.
This is a very beautiful preserve, with undisturbed nature and very well kept trails. It is very convenient in location as it's entrance is located right of the 114 road, which connects to the north ferry and south ferry. You also have a high chance of seeing wildlife, while I was hiking I saw egrets, deer, lots of chipmunks and of course a plentiful variety of birds so bring some binoculars. I would probably say Hiking in this Preserve is the number one thing to do on Shelter island.
